Lego Star Wars the Clone Wars is an ambitious step up from the previous games in the series, but does it still provide the classic charm of the other installments, or does it fall flat? Read on to find out!
The story takes place throughout the first two seasons of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”, the animated TV show. A large plethora of episodes are playable, spanning over three main enemy campaigns: General Grievous, Asajj Ventress and Count Dooku.
Sound: The game provides excellent music throughout each and every level. But its Star Wars, so who didn’t see that coming? Sound: 10/10
Gameplay: Between the classic puzzles, simple yet enjoyable battle sequences, colossal new space battles and gargantuan land battles, what could possibly go wrong? Well, quite a few things, actually. First off, the game barely instructs you on what the objectives are for anything, making you figure it out for yourself. Now, this is okay for the most part, but might become frustrating for younger gamers. Next, the land battles. They’re impossible to navigate, and the pathetic map the game provides you with barely helps at all. The space battles are somewhat on-rails, not letting you go up or down at will and making you feel like a padawan, not a Jedi. Once you get past all of these little bugs, you’d think the game would be pretty fun from then on. Be prepared to think again. After all of that, you encounter glitches. Plenty of them. Being the explorer I am, I checked out every nook and cranny of the levels, and along the way met a fair amount of level-stopping glitches. For example, in one level I was building a stairway and built two out of the three steps before realizing the third one was caught under the other two, in a glitch that caused me to have to restart the whole level. I did end up beating the level the second time through, but I still wish the developers had scouted out these sort of problems before releasing the game. If you really dedicate some time and effort to the game though, you will eventually find something of Lego Star Wars caliber. The land battle mode is an amazing new addition, one that I definitely applaud with the exception of the navigation problems. The space battles are still a blast, even if they don’t feel as free as you may want at times. As for the glitches, they’re not big enough to ruin the entire game (at least for the most part). And of course, last but not least is the classic Lego Star Wars gameplay we all know and love, with ingenious puzzles and single-button mashing combat. Althogether, the game still provides a new and fun experience that just needs some more fine tuning. Gameplay: 7.5/10
Multiplayer: Just as fun as single player, the only difference being that the irritatingly dumb AI players are replaced by your much smarter friends (at least we hope they’re smarter than the AI players). One gripe is the splitscreen, though. I can tell they had the idea right, with two people taking two seperate paths on one screen in one level, but the splitscreen itself is just downright quirky and awkward. Multiplayer: 7.5/10
Length: With over twenty levels of lego madness, the ten hidden collectible minikits found in each level (which are surprisingly hard to find in this particular Lego Star Wars game…), the unlockable red bricks and more, there’s loads of stuff to keep you busy with this game for quite a while. Length: 9.5/10
Overall: The Clone Wars gets an 8.8/10! A good edition to the Lego Star Wars series, and if you’re prepared to dig through the depths of this game to find the golden treasure at the bottom, then I suggest you pick it up.
