Review of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood for Xbox 360

Assassins. The epitome of cool. They go around doing parkour stunts and killing people in the shadows. But does Ubisoft take that potential and turn it in to an amazing game? Read on to find out.

Sound: The music is epic. I’m willing to say this is one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. The voice acting is fantastic too, with everything sounding like its from people straight out of Rome. Sound: 10/10

Presentation: The graphics look slick and polished. Character models move realistically and everything looks great. Presentation: 9/10

Gameplay: I was really looking forward to playing this game, based on how much everyone I knew liked it. Sadly, I was extremely disappointed when I picked up the controller and discovered a large array of issues right from the start. Load times were ridiculously long and half the time the game glitched out and wouldn’t let me pick an item off of the menu. But in the actual gameplay, even more problems arise. Controls are slippery and awkward, with every platforming stunt feeling like a complete leap of faith. Aside from that, combat is almost impossible to master, with your sword flailing to every possible spot except the enemy. All of this considered, I might be more lenient if the AI weren’t so punishing and extremely hard to beat. Really, this game’s difficulty is high, one of the highest I’ve ever encountered in a game. It’s ludicrous. Finally, the map. Maps are gargantuan, and how does the game let you traverse them? On foot, that’s how. You will spend hours of game time walking around from mission to mission, begging for it to just be over already. Gameplay: 1/10

Multiplayer: Of all the games to include a multiplayer, this one? Shockingly enough, multiplayer is a blast and delivers a fun, assassin-y feeling experience that has you hunting a person while someone else is hunting you, all in total secrecy and stealthiness. My only major gripes are that respawning and team balancing are terrible, with you constantly respawning right in front of your killer just to have him, guess what, kill you. Team balancing is pretty unfair as well, with the most high-ranking players being on one side and the newbies being on the other. But overall, a really cool multiplayer experience if you can look past its issues. Multiplayer: 7.5/10

Length: The story mode is fairly long, clocking in at about the eleven hour mark, but the problem is that story mode is terrible! So really only the first hour and a half is fun. Multiplayer, on the other hand, offers about five hours of fun and replayability before even becoming remotely stale. Length: 3.5/10

Overall: I was extremely tempted to give this game a negative score, but that would be unfair. Instead, what I’m going to do is break my rule of doing an averaged score. No, I’m going to give this game the score I think it really deserves, based on fun-factor. This horribly painful platformer gets a 3/10. Sure, you’ve got pretty graphics, music and cool online stuff, but at the end of the day who cares about all of that when the core of the game, its story mode, downright sucks?
